They both knew how isolated I was.

“Well, you never invite us over.”

True, I just couldn’t face putting up a portrayal of a domestic rural goddess. Cooking for the nit-picking him was bad enough; add my mum to the mix and that would really drive me into a nervous breakdown.

“Mum. I need to go to the gig.”

“Grow up. You shouldn’t be chasing after your ex-boyfriend when you have a young baby at home.”

“But it’s my first night out in months.”

“And your husband is working hard supporting you. If only I had that when you were growing up.”

I knew I sounded like a whiny teenager but this was the only thing I looked forward to in such a long time. A break from the mundanity. But I should have known by now, complaining to my mum was a waste of time.

“Look, there’ll be other nights out.”

A moment of sympathy for her calmed me down. There was nothing I could do. I was trapped at home with my baby. He arrived home in a taxi way past eleven at night. He stunk of beer and he pressed himself close to me for a kiss.

“Fuck you,” I said as I pushed him away.

“Hey!” he yelled.
